Beer brand design the explosion of craft beer
Beer label design — You’ve probably noticed the explosion in craft beers in your local pub, bars and supermarkets. Gone are the stuffy formal designs of Stella Artois, Budweiser and Fosters.
Out with the old
For these young upstarts the classic beer heritage style has gone, and an interesting array of designs has emerged.
Why am I writing about beer? No I’m not a beer guzzling alcoholic, at least not yet anyway. Well, I was looking for a nice bottle to photograph for a mockup that I created. So I popped out to my local supermarket and was very surprised with how healthy the beer market is.
Craft beer makers
What struck me was the diversity of the designs on offer and the sheer amount of craft beer makers—many right here in the UK.
The massive range of new and emerging beers with totally different branding really captured my attention. It might be me, but they seem to have krept up slowly so that I never really noticed them until now.
Beer label design re-writing the rules
What I liked was the fact that they never read the rule book on what a beer brand should look like. I liked that, it disrupts the norm and shakes up the whole market.
Now that I have noticed I’m going to give a rundown on my favourite designs.
Beavertown brewery can and bottle design
The thing that makes these beer cans and bottles really stand out from the crowd is the quirky illustrations by Nick Dwyer.
The comic book style is awesome and differentiates Beavertown from everyone else.
Brewdog beer label design
Brewdog’s design is a simple type affair, its modern and punchy. Apparently they used wood cut and metal letters to create the labels. It gives it that authentic hand made look and feel.
Brixton brewery label design
The Brixton Brewery includes the colourful Brixton neighbourhood in its label design, and that makes for an explosion of colour.
The design has African batiks patterns that reflect the African and European inspiration.
Camden town brewery
Love the bottle and can designs of Camden town brewery. So clean, bright, graphic and fresh. Its bold use of type and block colours really make it stand out.
Cervecería Sagrada beer label design
Cervecería Sagrada is a Mexican Craft Beer. Lucha Libre is a term used in Mexico for a form of professional wrestling. The masks the wrestlers wear are one of the most iconic symbols of Mexican pop culture. Remember the Nacho Libre movie with Jack Black?
It’s pop kitch, but kind of puts Mexico craft beer on the map for beer fans.
Cloudwater beer label design
I like the fact that cloudwater have invented their own style. Featuring abstract style art, its almost Andy Warhol on a bottle.
Fourpure Brewing Co. Craft Beer label design
While the initial designs were different that your typical beer, they have started to branch out into a more urban illustrative style.
Magic Rock brewing can design
Magic rock have got the illustrative doodle look and feel. The design would not be out of place on a sweet wrapper or soft drink design. I think that makes it stand out, you just don’t expect that kind of design on a alcoholic drink.
The five points brewing label design
The five points have gone for a classic look, but not the classic beer look. It is a clean typographical style that harks back to old railway posters and signage. It’s different and I really love it.
Adnams beer bottle design
Adnams is a simple, bold design that features vibrant pastel colours. While it may not rock your world it’s still a world away from the usual beer brand style.
That is all.
