10 awesome examples of brush lettering
Along with brush fonts, I’m very partial to a nice bit of brush lettering. I love the loose type of lettering created with a real brush.
I’m not so much a fan of old-school calligraphy. With enough practice, anyone can learn to create the perfect calligraphic lettering.
That’s too formal, too stuffy and boring for me.
Energy and passion
What makes my mouth water is quirky lettering, lettering full of energy, vitality and vigour. Even to the point where the energy is more important than the message. It’s actually much harder to get that energy via a brush than you might think.
I love where someone felt strongly enough about something that they had to pick up a brush and tell the world. Exposing a little bit of themselves in the process.
Even if it’s not perfect, in fact, it’s the imperfection that can make the difference. Graphic design is all about perfection, the perfect typeface, colour choice and layout. Brush lettering tends to ignore all the crap and get right to the point.
A bit of sentiment can go a long way
Sure, many of them are sickly sweet and full of sentiment. You could just dismiss them as “Teen Angst” or “Something pretty”
But in a world where everything is going to shit, a bit of sentiment can go a long way.
Sometimes a little bit of self-indulgent lettering it just what you need. With that in mind here are just 10 brush lettering images that I liked enough to share with you here.
