The best film posters don’t explain everything. They give you just enough to make you look.
Hitchcut Font follows the same rule. It is a bold, cut-out display typeface inspired by the graphic simplicity of Saul Bass and the unforgettable visual world of Alfred Hitchcock.
No decoration for decoration’s sake.
Just shapes, ideas and letters that know exactly what they are doing.
A font inspired by Vertigo
Hitchcut Font began as my homage to the iconic poster for Hitchcock’s Vertigo, designed by Saul Bass.
The name combines “Hitchcock” with “cut-out”, which tells you almost everything you need to know. The letterforms are constructed from straight lines and simple shapes that look as though they have been cut quickly from paper by hand.
They are basic without being boring.
Simple without being safe.
That distinction matters.
Why Hitchcut Font looks handmade
Perfect digital lettering can feel strangely lifeless. Every repeated character is identical. Every edge is obedient. Nothing unexpected happens.
Real handmade lettering does not work like that.
Hitchcut Font includes three contextual alternatives for each of its 26 letters. Activate the contextual alternates in compatible OpenType software and the font automatically switches between different versions as you type.
Repeated letters no longer look copied and pasted. Words gain variation, rhythm and a little controlled unpredictability.
It looks less like typing.
And more like design.
Three alternatives make a big difference
A single alternative character can change the balance of an entire word.
With three versions of every letter, Hitchcut Font gives you enough variation to create headlines and typographic arrangements that feel individual without making the design difficult to control.
You can let the contextual alternatives work automatically or choose particular glyphs yourself when refining a wordmark, title or poster.
The computer does the repetition.
You make the decisions.
Where to use Hitchcut Font
Hitchcut is a bold display font designed to be seen rather than politely noticed. Its graphic construction makes it particularly effective for:
- Film posters and title graphics
- Book and magazine covers
- Editorial headlines
- Album artwork
- Logos and visual identities
- Packaging and product labels
- Event posters and invitations
- Social-media campaigns
Use it large.
Give it space.
Let the shapes do the talking.
Simple letterforms are difficult
Adding more is easy. Another effect. Another texture. Another clever flourish added because the first five clever flourishes apparently looked lonely.
Removing things takes confidence.
Hitchcut Font strips the alphabet back to straight lines, cut-paper shapes and bold proportions. What remains is direct, recognisable and difficult to ignore.
The font includes letters, numbers, punctuation and symbols and is supplied in OTF format. Its OpenType features make the alternate characters straightforward to access in compatible design applications.
Cut out everything unnecessary
Good typography carries the message.
Great typography becomes the message.
Hitchcut Font gives designers a bold cinematic voice without relying on complicated effects. It takes a simple idea and commits to it completely.
Because a typeface does not need more detail to create more impact.
Sometimes it simply needs a better idea.
