About Michael Stipe painting
Michael Stipe has always seemed more interested in making people think than explaining exactly what they should think. As the unmistakable voice of R.E.M., he helped turn thoughtful, unconventional songs into some of alternative rock’s most enduring music.
This expressive portrait captures his distinctive presence without making everything too polished or precise. Loose brushwork, layered colour and fractured details reflect the ambiguity and intensity found throughout R.E.M.’s music, allowing his face to emerge through the marks.
I created the original artwork on my iPad, digitally combining different painting techniques before printing it onto a wood panel. I then worked back into the image by hand, adding real paint, drips and physical textures.
The finished piece sits somewhere between a digital portrait and a traditional mixed-media painting. Visible brush marks and hand-applied details give the surface genuine depth, making every copy slightly different.
It would make a distinctive gift for any Michael Stipe fan, R.E.M. enthusiast or collector of expressive portrait art — particularly someone who wants more character than a conventional music poster.
I only have two copies of this artwork. Each one is finished individually by hand, so the paint marks and finer details will vary slightly from the image shown.
