David Bowie painting

David Bowie never seemed content with being just one person. Musician, performer, actor and relentless shape-shifter, he spent his career turning reinvention into an art form.

This slightly abstract portrait captures some of that mystery and transformation. Expressive brushwork, layered colour and fractured details allow Bowie’s face to emerge through the marks, creating something more distinctive than a conventional celebrity portrait.

I created the original artwork on my iPad, digitally combining different painting techniques before printing it onto a wood panel. I then worked back into the image by hand, adding real paint, drips and physical textures.

The finished piece sits somewhere between a digital portrait and a traditional mixed-media painting. Its rich colours, visible brush marks and hand-applied details give the surface genuine depth, making every copy slightly different.

It would make a distinctive gift for any David Bowie fan, music lover or collector of expressive portrait art — particularly someone who wants something with more character than a conventional poster.

I only have two copies of this artwork. Each one is finished individually by hand, so the paint marks and finer details will vary slightly from the image shown.
