A cracked plastisol texture can make pristine digital artwork look like it has survived twenty years of gigs, washing machines and questionable life choices. The trouble is, most fake ageing looks exactly that—fake. The secret isn’t adding more grunge. It’s understanding how real printed ink cracks, then knowing when to stop.
Perfect is the problem
Artwork straight from Illustrator is usually too clean. The edges are flawless. The colour is flat. Every line sits exactly where it was told.
Very professional. Completely lifeless.
A good plastisol texture breaks that perfection. It adds random cracks, missing ink and worn edges that make a design feel printed rather than placed.

But there is a fine line between a vintage T-shirt and something that looks as if it has been dragged behind a van.
What is plastisol ink?
Plastisol is a PVC-based ink commonly used for screen printing onto clothing. Unlike water-based ink, which soaks further into the fabric, plastisol sits more noticeably on its surface.
It creates strong, opaque colour and can last for years. It also needs heat to cure properly. Over time, washing, stretching and general abuse can cause the printed surface to split and crack.

Normally, that would be considered wear.
Designers call it character.
Why real plastisol cracks look different
Real cracked ink is unpredictable. Some areas remain almost perfect while others break apart. Fine cracks sit next to larger missing sections. The damage follows the movement of the fabric rather than spreading evenly across the design.
That randomness matters.
Adding the same grunge texture over an entire image usually produces a flat, mechanical result. Real ageing has quiet areas, damaged areas and the occasional bit that has clearly given up altogether.
How I created my plastisol textures
I could have downloaded a photograph of a cracked surface and called it authentic. The internet is full of that sort of optimism.
Instead, I printed real white plastisol ink onto black T-shirts using my small screen-printing press. Some prints received a thin layer of ink. Others got an indecent amount.

After curing the ink, I stretched the fabric to force the surface to crack. Then I washed it, dried it and repeated the process. Different ink thicknesses and different directions of stretch created completely different patterns.
The finished prints were digitised, cleaned up and converted into high-resolution Photoshop textures, masks and brushes.
Real ink. Real fabric. Real cracks. Much less pretending.
How to create a cracked plastisol texture in Photoshop
1. Start with clean artwork
Open your design in Photoshop at its intended final size. A high-resolution document gives the cracked texture enough detail to remain convincing, particularly if the artwork will be printed.
Keep your design on its own layer or convert it into a Smart Object. This makes the effect easier to edit later.
2. Place the texture above your artwork
Add your cracked ink texture on a new layer above the design. Scale and rotate it until the pattern feels appropriate.
Avoid stretching it too far. Long, distorted cracks tend to reveal that the texture has been forced into place.
3. Increase the contrast
If you are working with a scanned or photographed texture, desaturate it and use Levels or Curves to increase the contrast.
You want a clear separation between the printed surface and the damaged areas. Keep some grey detail if you want softer wear, or push it towards pure black and white for harder cracks.
4. Apply it as a layer mask
Copy the texture, add a layer mask to your artwork and paste the texture into the mask.
In a Photoshop mask:
- White reveals the artwork
- Black removes the artwork
- Grey creates partial transparency
If the wrong part disappears, invert the mask. Photoshop is very obedient. It just occasionally obeys the opposite instruction.
5. Break up the pattern
Do not use one texture at exactly the same strength across the entire design.
Paint into the mask with a textured brush to remove some cracking and strengthen other areas. Keep faces, small lettering and important details more legible. Let larger blocks of colour take more damage.
The eye should notice the design first and the texture second.
6. Distress the edges
Old screen-printed artwork rarely retains perfect vector edges. Use a smaller cracked ink brush around the outside of letters, illustrations and solid shapes.
Again, random is good. Completely destroyed is just showing off.
7. Add the fabric colour
Place a fabric colour or photograph beneath the artwork. Because the texture has been applied as a mask, the background will show naturally through the missing ink.
This usually looks more convincing than placing a white grunge image on top and changing the blending mode. It also lets you change the artwork colour without rebuilding the effect.
Screen or Multiply?
Blending modes can still be useful when testing a texture quickly:
- Use Multiply when the texture is dark on a light background
- Use Screen when the texture is light on a dark background
- Use a layer mask when you want proper control and a reusable result
Screen and Multiply are quick. Masks are better.
How to stop the texture looking fake
The usual mistake is simply using too much of it.
- Vary the amount of cracking across the design
- Combine fine cracks with a few larger breaks
- Protect important lettering and facial details
- Let some areas remain almost untouched
- Change the scale and angle when combining textures
- Check the design at its final reproduction size
A texture that looks beautifully detailed at 200% zoom may turn into grey soup when printed on a T-shirt.
Zoom out. The customer will.
Common plastisol texture mistakes
Using a concrete texture
Concrete cracks like concrete. Paint flakes like paint. Plastisol stretches and splits with fabric. They are not interchangeable simply because they all look a bit old.
Applying equal damage everywhere
Uniform wear looks generated. Real wear has rhythm: quiet areas, busy areas and gaps.
Destroying small text
If the wording becomes unreadable, the texture is no longer helping the design. Reduce the strength of the mask around fine details.
Ignoring the edges
A heavily cracked interior surrounded by a perfectly smooth vector edge looks wrong. Add a little wear around the outline to connect the two.
Making every design look ancient
Not everything needs to resemble a T-shirt found behind a radiator in 1987. Sometimes a few fine cracks are enough.

Perfect is boring. Completely ruined isn’t much use either.
