A plastisol texture is a digital design asset that recreates the cracked, flaking and worn appearance of ageing screen-printed ink.
Designers apply these textures to clean artwork in Photoshop or Illustrator to make it look physically printed, washed and worn. They are particularly useful for vintage T-shirt graphics, band merchandise, posters, packaging and distressed typography.
In short: it makes something created five minutes ago look as though it has survived twenty years of gigs, washing machines and questionable life choices.
What is plastisol ink?
Plastisol is a thick, opaque ink commonly used for screen-printing graphics onto clothing. Unlike thinner water-based inks, it sits predominantly on the surface of the fabric and must be heated to cure.
As an older printed garment is repeatedly worn, stretched and washed, the solid layer of ink can begin to split. Fine cracks appear, small areas disappear and the fabric starts showing through. Technically, the print is deteriorating. Creatively, it is finally becoming
What does a plastisol texture do?
A digital plastisol texture reproduces those physical cracks and missing areas without requiring you to print and destroy an actual T-shirt. It can be applied as a brush, mask, overlay, Smart Object or vector texture depending on the software and file format.
Designers use plastisol textures to:
- Create authentic vintage T-shirt graphics
- Distress typography, logos and illustrations
- Add a screen-printed quality to clean vector artwork
- Create worn band merchandise and album artwork
- Give posters, packaging and editorial graphics a physical history
How do you use a plastisol texture?
Place the texture over your artwork and use its cracked areas to remove parts of the design. The background or fabric colour then shows through the missing ink, recreating the appearance of an old screen print.

How to use a plastisol texture in Photoshop
- Open your artwork at its intended final size.
- Keep the artwork on its own layer or convert it into a Smart Object.
- Place the plastisol texture on a layer above the design.
- Copy the texture and paste it into a layer mask attached to your artwork.
- Adjust Levels or Curves to control the strength of the cracking.
- Invert the mask if the wrong areas disappear.
- Use a textured brush to vary the damage and protect important details.
In a Photoshop layer mask, black conceals the artwork, white reveals it and grey produces partial transparency. A mask gives you much more control than simply dropping a distressed image over the top.
For a quicker result, try Multiply with a dark texture or Screen with a light one. Blend modes are quick. Masks are better.

How to use a plastisol texture in Illustrator
- Select and group the artwork you want to distress.
- Open Window > Transparency.
- Click Make Mask.
- Select the mask thumbnail in the Transparency panel.
- Paste or place your plastisol texture inside the mask.
- Position and scale the texture over the artwork.
- Use Invert Mask if the wrong parts become transparent.
- Untick Clip if Illustrator hides the entire design.
An opacity mask knocks transparent cracks through the artwork, allowing the colour beneath it to show through. This makes the finished design feel printed onto the background rather than covered by a generic grunge
Which plastisol texture format should you use?
- Photoshop brushes (.ABR): useful for manually adding and removing small areas of wear.
- PNG or TIFF textures: suitable for overlays, masks and high-resolution print artwork.
- Layered PSD files: best for editable Smart Object effects and quick experimentation.
- Vector textures: useful in Illustrator when artwork must remain scalable and editable.
How do you make a plastisol effect look realistic?
The main rule is not to apply the same amount of damage everywhere. Real ink does not crack evenly. Some areas remain almost perfect while others split, stretch and disappear.
- Combine fine cracks with a few larger breaks
- Vary the scale and direction of different textures
- Protect faces, small lettering and essential details
- Add a little wear around otherwise perfect vector edges
- Check the artwork at its final reproduction size
- Stop before the texture becomes more noticeable than the design
A concrete texture cracks like concrete. Paint flakes like paint. Plastisol splits and stretches with the fabric. Starting with a texture made from real screen-printed ink produces a much more believable
Can plastisol textures be used for physical screen printing?
Yes, but inspect the finished artwork at its actual print size. Very small cracks can close up during film output or screen printing, while excessive distressing can make fine lettering unreadable. Check the artwork with your printer and adjust the texture for the intended mesh, ink and printing method.
Where did my plastisol textures come from?
I created mine using real white plastisol ink and a small screen-printing press. I printed the ink onto black T-shirts, cured it, stretched the fabric, washed it and repeated the process until the surface produced useful cracks.
The best prints were digitised and carefully cleaned without removing the irregularities that made them convincing. Real ink. Real fabric. Real cracks. Much less
