Most brands do not begin by needing a font. They begin by needing to look more like themselves. That could mean licensing a strong retail face, changing a few carefully chosen characters or commissioning an entirely original custom font. The clever choice is not automatically the most expensive one. It is the one that solves the problem without buying three floors of scaffolding to change a light bulb. More is not the same as better.
Three routes. Three different jobs.

When a retail font is the right answer
Retail fonts are not a consolation prize. A good typeface, chosen intelligently and licensed correctly, can do excellent work.
Choose retail when the deadline is close, the budget is limited or the brand does not yet need exclusive typography. The advantage is obvious: the font already exists. You can test it, licence it and get moving.
The compromise is equally obvious. Someone else can buy it tomorrow. Possibly your competitor. Possibly the new coffee shop around the corner. Possibly an organic dog biscuit company with a surprisingly large branding budget.
When font modification makes sense
Sometimes a font is nearly right. The proportions work. The tone works. Then the logo needs a different G, the packaging needs a less polite R or the lowercase letters need more character.
Modification can include:
- Redrawing selected characters
- Adding alternate letters or ligatures
- Creating brand-specific symbols
- Extending language support
- Adjusting spacing and kerning
- Developing an additional weight
The original licence must allow the proposed work, or permission must be obtained from the rights holder. “We bought the font” does not automatically mean “we can alter the font”. Licensing has an irritating habit of remaining important even when everyone is excited about the new logo.
When to commission a custom font
A bespoke typeface makes sense when typography needs to become part of the identity rather than sit politely inside it.
It is particularly useful when:
- The brand needs a voice competitors cannot licence
- Typography appears across many campaigns or products
- A particular personality is missing from existing fonts
- The team needs consistent characters, symbols or numerals
- Long-term control matters more than a quick fix
The design begins with the brand, not a catalogue. That means the proportions, texture, rhythm and details can all be developed for a reason.
Do not commission a symphony when you need a doorbell
A large global foundry is designed for large global problems: many stakeholders, many languages, many platforms and a substantial rollout. That is valuable expertise. It is also not every brief.
An independent designer can build the scope around what you genuinely need. You speak to the person doing the work. Decisions do not need a guided tour through several departments. The project can stay personal, focused and properly ambitious without becoming needlessly enormous.
A simple decision
Ask yourself three questions:
- Is an existing font already right? Licence it.
- Is it right apart from a few important details? Explore modification.
- Does the brand need something nobody else can have? Commission something original.
The right answer may be smaller than you expected. Or more ambitious. The point is to choose deliberately.
